The external affairs minister of India, Sushma Swaraj is in a plan to meet the Egyptian external affairs minister, Sameh Shoukri. The aim is to extend and continue the diplomatic relationship between both the countries in a smooth and flawless manner. The renowned Indian politician was in Cairo on 23rd August and was scheduled to stay till 25th August. She is on a tour to Egypt and Germany to strengthen international ties. It was also reported that the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi would meet the external affairs minister of India on Monday.
The secretary general of the Arab League, Nabil Elaraby gave a speech at the Diplomatic Club at Cairo. The speech was given at an event that was hosted by the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs. This was reported by the Indian Media. The Egyptian ambassador for India, Hossam Tag Eldin even said that the visit of the external foreign affairs minister would represent an altogether new phase of cooperation between India and Egypt. This was claimed in a foreign ministry statement on the last Sunday. It will also play a big role in strengthening the base of politics in both the countries.
The Indian state minister of minority affairs and parliamentary affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi visited Egypt in the month of July. He gave an official invitation to El-Sisi on behalf of the prime minister of India and requested it to participate in the third India Africa summit to be held in October this year in Delhi.
Currently, the trade relationship between India and Egypt is pretty strong and it is worth $5.5 billion. It is important to note India is the seventh largest trade partner of Egypt. This was acquired from a statistics made by the State Information Service of Egypt. Apart from this, Nitin Gadkari, the Indian minister of shipping and transport also attended the opening ceremony of the New Suez Canal Waterway. The opening ceremony was held on 6th August, 2015 and was opened with huge success.
Tag Eldin, the ambassador also claimed that many Indian companies are looking forward to investing in the expansion project of the Suez Canal Waterway. Currently, more than 50 Indian companies are operating in Egypt. These companies have employed more than 35, 000 employees from Egypt and invested an amount of $2.5 billion in the country. Agreements between the two countries were signed on Monday.
India and Egypt have enjoyed a historical contact from ancient times. Since the 1980s four prime ministers have visited the country- Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, I.K Gujral and Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Swaraj said that a unique transformation is taking place in India both in terms of economic and political fronts. She also said that the current government of Narendra Modi is determined to take the country to new heights. The government is ushering into the avenues of rapid economic development. The mood and perception of India has changed because of the will and determination showed by the Modi Government in the last few months.
